On December 5, Mrs. Cunnane’s and Ms. Hollenbach’s STEM class presented and showcased their final gingerbread structures to the Rotary Club of Jenkintown. Members were in awe of the students and eager to learn their process.
It all started with a “5-senses” exploration of the gingerbread recipe ingredients. Next, students experimented using honey versus sugar, butter versus margarine, and white flour versus gluten-free flour. Each batch had different consistencies and textures. After many observations, testing and research, they settled on a traditional recipe and began to build their projects. By using the scientific method and the steps of the engineering process, students learned that their final products had to be strong enough to be put together with icing. When the structures were solidly built, the fun began by decorating with icing, candy, and other food items.
So proud of the students for their perseverance and patience as they worked through all the stages to create their masterpieces.
Special thanks to Mrs. Cunnane for her idea and planning!
